The emergence of video on cell phones is largely due to the introduction of broadband wireless networks and the public’s acceptance of digital media downloads.
Wi-Fi networks are allowing mobile operators to offer mobile phones that double as an indoor cordless phone for businesses and consumers. It is part of the future direction of 3G networks, defined in the 3GPP standard codec for video.

What is 3GPP? 3GPP is an acronym for 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), a GSM-based consortium advocating standardization for mobile communications.
Its agreed upon media format is widely used on mobile phones and media PDAs.
Tailored to the unique requirements of mobile devices, 3GPP and 3GPP2 take advantage of MPEG-4, the standard for delivery of video and audio over the internet.

Leading providers of these standards-based multimedia phones include:
Motorola, NEC, Nokia, Palm, Sanyo and Sony/Ericsson.
